Dealing With The Police And Avoiding An Arrest

Any amount of time in jail is too much time. Not only will it be unpleasant for you, but you’ll also cause your friends and loved ones to worry.

If you’re dealing with the police, follow these tips to avoid being arrested.

Stay calm.
It can be easy to get upset and worried, but try to maintain calm. If you get upset and yell, a police officer could feel disrespected and get suspicious.

Know that you don’t have to answer questions.
You do need to comply with orders, but you don’t have to answer questions. Instead, stay calm and remain polite, saying, “I mean no disrespect, but I am not required by law to answer that.”

You don’t have to consent to a search.
Police are trained to get you to agree to a search, but unless you’re at the border they generally aren’t allowed to perform any kind of search without a warrant. Don’t consent to being searched.

Ask the right questions.
Make sure that officers know that you know your rights. Ask if you are free to go. When an officer asks you to do something, ask if it is a request or an order. Ask if they have a reason to detain you. All of these things could lead to you being released.

Remember, police can lie.
They can use this to try and get more information out of you. Stay calm and don’t answer any questions that you think may be used against you.

In some instances, nothing you say can help you avoid being arrested. If you are arrested, the best thing to do is get out of jail and start working on your defense.
