A man with Lafayette ties is recovering in a Florida hospital after a teenager stole his car, then ran him over.
In early January Joshua Roe was donating household items to elderly people in a Florida neighborhood. He decided to leave his car running due to the cold temperatures, and he didn’t plan to stay long.
Soon after Joshua exited the home he realized that he didn’t see his car, and he called police.
When he noticed the car nearby, the 16-year-old driver sped towards him. He tried to jump out of the way, but the teenager ran him over.
According to newspaper WCJB, the teenage suspect says that the steering of the vehicle locked up and caused him to run Joshua over.
After the suspect ran him over, he left and picked up two friends. A police pursuit ensued until the car ended up in a ditch. The police were able to arrest the three boys in the car, and they were charged with grand theft auto and resisting arrest.
The driver of the car is also facing an attempted murder charge.
Joshua and his wife Elizabeth, who met in Lafayette, are living in Florida while Joshua pursues his Ph.D. at the University of Florida.
