Tips For Defendants In The Criminal Justice System
We hope that you’ll never need these tips, but if you’ve been arrested, you’re now a defendant in the criminal justice system.
Here are a few tips to help you if you’re in this position.
Dress Appropriately
The judge sees many defendants every day, so it’s important to take your opportunity to make a good first impression and appear neat and clean.
Be On Time
There’s no easier way to make a judge mad than to show up late for court, or not to show up at all. Be on time so that judge can focus on your case, not on your tardiness.
Be Respectful
Show respect for the judge and the court. Answer questions with “yes, sir” and “no, sir.” Again, this allows the judge to focus on your case, and harbor no ill will towards you.
Be Prepared
Bring any supporting documents to court with you. Don’t expect the judge to rely on your word if you say you paid that parking ticket, or that the DMV reinstated your license. Bring the proof with you.
Hire A Good Lawyer
There is no substitute for hiring a good lawyer. When you do, wait to talk to him or her until you are in private, in a secure place outside of the courtroom.
Sound simple enough? It’s hard to follow these tips from inside a jail cell.
The best way to work on a good defense is to be out of jail, and to do that you need to call a bail bondsman.
